Designer Spotlight: Christy Steen
Personality Over Perfection
Some spaces don’t just look beautiful — they feel right.
For Christy Steen, founder of Steen Studio in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, that feeling is everything.
“The best moment of my job is when clients tell me how good their space FEELS.”
Christy’s path into design began organically. After building her own home ten years ago, friends began asking for help with theirs. What started as one project at a time — often during nap hours while raising young children — slowly evolved into something bigger. When her youngest started kindergarten, she officially launched Steen Studio.
“This work feels like God’s kindness to me,” she shares. “My primary goal is to honor the people I work for and with, design itself and the Lord.”
It’s a philosophy rooted in humility, artistry and intention.
Project Spotlight: AMT Hot Training Studio
The AMT Hot Training studio lobby presented a unique challenge: how do you introduce peace and calm without stripping away bold energy?
Christy’s answer was clarity through editing — and a sculptural moment in tile.
“The lobby needed to be functionally smooth and visually beautiful.”
The space was centered around a curved reception desk wrapped in Bedrosians Cloe in Black. The dark, glossy finish provided a dramatic juxtaposition against ultra-matte, cloudy limewash walls.
The effect is immediate. Grounded. Intentional.
The reception desk became both anchor and art — a focal point that defines flow while maintaining openness.
“The dark, glossy nature of the tile provided the perfect juxto to the ultra matte walls.”
By simplifying and keeping only the essentials, the design allows materiality to speak. The handcrafted variation in Cloe adds depth and soul — never flat, never predictable.
Why Bedrosians
Christy gravitates toward materials with authenticity and character.
“I reach for Bedrosians tiles often because they feel artful. The natural variation, color and craftsmanship gives soul and depth to spaces.”
She’s especially drawn to:
- Zagora for its artisan texture
- Jumbo basketweave mosaics for movement
- Cloe for rich tonal depth
- Celine for pattern potential
Her approach to tile selection is intuitive yet thoughtful.
“When choosing tile, I look for something with natural variation and character, made from authentic materials, when possible. Trust what you’re drawn to, most of all.”
A Return to Personality
Christy is energized by the return of individuality in interiors.
Antiques. Artisan goods. Color. Layering.
“Personality over perfection.”
She’s currently exploring marble trim details and two-tone tile pattern play — mixing collections like Zagora, Cloe and Celine to create depth and graphic movement.
In the AMT lobby, that philosophy is felt immediately upon entry.
“The reception area sets the tone for the gym. Polished yet raw and true — a reflection of the studio’s spirit.”
It’s bold without being loud. Calm without being quiet.
A balance achieved through material honesty and intentional restraint.
Final Thoughts
Christy closed her interview with a simple note:
“Thank you, Bedrosians Team, for this opportunity. I’m tickled because I truly love using your product.”
We love seeing how designers like Christy use material to shape experience — creating spaces that are not only visually compelling but emotionally resonant.
